Panjab Floods 2023

Summary

Every year, thousands of acres of crops in Panjab are unyieldingly decimated by unseasonal rains, storms and floods. In July 2023, Panjab was devastated by an unyielding flood. Torrential rain and subsequent flooding significantly impacted 1,058 villages across 14 districts in Panjab, posing threats to human and animal life.

How we are helping

Devastating financial and food loss has led Khalsa Aid to launch a programme to assist suffering farmers since 2020. Khalsa Aid were on ground supporting Panjab during floods a year prior.

Of Phase 1 operations, saving lives was of paramount importance at this time, and Khalsa Aid teams combed villages and rescued stranded people. Children and the elderly were especially vulnerable to their unpredictable surroundings, and were therefore prioritised.

Areas of impact

Food

Monthly ration kits, including essential food items and hygiene products, were distributed to support communities during the recovery phase. Our commitment also extended to providing livestock with active feed distribution in various locations, ensuring the well-being of animals affected by the disaster. 60 acres of rice were cultivated.

Our impact

One of Khalsa Aid's primary areas of focus is providing immediate relief during natural disasters and conflicts. When disasters like earthquakes, floods, or tsunamis strike, Khalsa Aid is often among the first organizations on the ground, distributing food, water, medical supplies, and shelter to affected populations.

“Panjab faced three major disasters in the last few years; two floods amongst COVID-19. Despite these challenges, Punjabi citizens have shown remarkable resilience. Their positivity and determination prevail and have brought people from different communities together. We feel fortunate to have been able to support our community during their time of need.”
