Khalsa Aid’s Student Welfare Project aims to empower international students, to reduce obstacles to success and create a supportive community for international students in the UK. The project enhances integration and safety by hosting seminars with experts from various fields and industries, and distributing essential monthly grocery packs.
Khalsa Aid has been alerted to concerning profiteering and exploitation of newly enrolled international students in the UK, including issues with housing, employment, and sexual exploitation. Due to cultural barriers, many students struggled to seek help. Khalsa Aid identified the need for comprehensive information to help students avoid risks and find assistance.
There are two forms of welfare support that Khalsa Aid provide:
Khalsa Aid facilitates informational seminars in city centre locations across the UK, featuring influential guest speakers. These events require ticketed-admission to ensure warm food and drink and educational resources are provided to every attendee. We understand our recognisability in the UK Asian community, and are committed to utilising our influence for good.
Langar Aid provide monthly grocery packs to international students across the UK. This distribution piloted in Coventry, and has continued throughout towns in the West Midlands and West London. These grocery packages last over a month, and contain a 5kg bag of atta (flour), a 5kg bag of rice, 2 tins each of mung, chickpea and kidney bean, a 2kg bag of lentils, 4 tomato tins, a litre of vegetable oil, and other refreshments such as tea bags and biscuits.
Khalsa Aid is eager to expand the Student Welfare project in the coming years. We ask for you continued support in doing so.
Students Benefitted
"Our International Student Events impact the choices students make in the future, ensuring they are not put into vulnerable situations and are aware of the rights they have living in this country. The events also provided opportunities for networking and making friends, which helped alleviate loneliness and isolation. We are very proud.”
