Syrian Refugee Relief

Summary

Farming district Torbali is home to many. In January 2017, Khalsa Aid assessed the needs of these refugees living in unofficial camps, make-shift scattered across the region. This was the beginning of Khalsa Aid's efforts towards Syrian refugees across the Kurdistan Region, which continues to this day.

Timeline

23 Jan 2017

Turkey is one of the largest refugee-hosting countries in the world, and its southern city of Adana is one of the many cities seeing a huge influx of refugees fleeing the war in Syria. Khalsa Aid began assessing the needs of refugees living in unofficial camps.

15 Jan 2017

As part of first phase relief provision, teams packed and distributed food aid packs for 200 refugee families. These bags would become a monthly occurrence for an average family.

In Torbali, Khalsa Aid funded 1000 pallets and tarpaulin sheets to elevate tents and prevent flooding. Teams worked to facilitate prayer facilities in Adana for Muslim refugees, so they can continue practicing their faith.

14 Feb 2021

Amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, Syrian refugee camps are rife with poverty. The violent persecution of the Yezidi people have left families without breadwinners, meaning many families are left starved. Funded by KA USA, KA Canada and KA International, Khalsa Aid Iraq provided 1950 food packs on deployment. 1000 monthly food packs continue to be sent to these camps.

07 May 2021

Families were unable to afford gifts and clothes for the celebration of Eid. Khalsa Aid designed and forwent a project to financially assist 350 orphans (aged between 5 and 17) living in camps and Mosul.

Later, a local restaurant in Zakho approached Khalsa Aid and offered meals to distribute to poor families. Warmly welcoming this collaboration, a team managed an iftar (meals to break fast during Ramadan) and also provided toys for 32 more orphans in Zakho.

01 Jun 2021

As part of International Children's Day, Khalsa Aid provided several activities to the orphaned children across refugee camps, including painting and drawing tools to keep, desserts and sweets and toys for everyone.

20 Aug 2021

Local shop 21 Men Fashion donated 3000 pieces of men's clothing to Khalsa Aid. This selection enabled the team to open up a shop as a means to distribute these clothes to vulnerable families in Duhok, as well as poverty-stricken IDPs living outside of camps.

29 Sep 2021

Khalsa Aid established the 'Back to School' project, a semi-permanent project for school children that provides stationary, backpacks, books and folders. Up to 600 students in the Akre camp were benefited.

01 Nov 2024

Khalsa Aid provided 55 cover sheets for 55 families that will help the vulnerable families in Khanke, a non-official refugee camp - to live safely and be protected from hard conditions of cold weather in their shelters.

03 Jan 2022

Over 12 million Syrians remained forcibly displaced in the region. Syrian refugees crossed the border into Kurdistan, where the Khalsa Aid team met them to provide hot meals upon their arrival. The team continued to serve hot meals at both the border and the camp until the refugees were provided with tents and other basic necessities.
