In 2017, Khalsa Aid took on the commitment to rebuild the homes of 25 Sikligar Sikh families in the village of Anjad, district Burhanpur in Madya Pradesh. Teams installed water systems to provide fresh, clean water and drafted plans to help and fund childrens' education in Anjad. Khalsa Aid teams completed this work in March 2018.
Sikligars Sikhs were ‘lohars’ (ironsmiths/blacksmiths), and were in great demand during the medieval period. Spears, swords, shields and arrows and other weaponry were traded globally. With the advent of modern weapons and industrial technology, the Sikligar Sikhs suffered economically and are now an impoverished and discriminated-against people. Furthermore, water is a fleeting resource in their villages, with the nearest source being a 1 kilometer walk away.
Khalsa Aid identified 25 Sikligar Sikhs in desperate need of better housing. These homes have since been rebuilt, and 2 water pumps have been installed in the village to allow for easier water collection.
