In two deployments (2021-23), Khalsa Aid established a watertight operation for Madagascar Famine Relief. Teams delivered vital assistance in response to the severe malnutrition reported in the deep South of the country, the key areas being Antananarivo, Tsiroanomandidy and Toamasina.
Khalsa Aid returned in 2023 to provide aid in the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy.
Madagascar frequently faces natural disasters, but in June 2021, after enduring years of severe weather, the island experienced its worst drought in four decades. This devastated crops and subjected 1.2 million people to food insecurity and 400,000 more in a critical state of famine, many resorting to the consumption of mud, clay and ashes.
We distributed to more than 200 families per day, providing each with the resources to sustain them for at least 2 weeks.
We solely purchased from local suppliers in a deliberate effort to support the local economy and farming trade.
Khalsa Aid returned in December 2023 to continue food distribution efforts alongside Lion's Club International.
One of Khalsa Aid's primary areas of focus is providing immediate relief during natural disasters and conflicts. When disasters like earthquakes, floods, or tsunamis strike, Khalsa Aid is often among the first organizations on the ground, distributing food, water, medical supplies, and shelter to affected populations.
