Haiti Relief 2010-21

Summary

The 2010 earthquake in Haiti left 220,000 people dead, destroyed 50% of schools and adversely affected over 3.5 million people. Khalsa Aid has been providing supplies, food, water pumps, and other essentials to eight orphanages over the last 11 years.

Timeline

09 Mar 2010

Many orphanages found to be struggling to provide food for orphans. Khalsa Aid stepped in to provide food packs and other essentials.

12 May 2010

After surveying the area and requiring local knowledge, the very first water pump was installed in an orphanage in Leoganne. Khalsa Aid started work on installing water pumps in three more orphanages.

20 Aug 2012

Four volunteers flew to Haiti to continue the aid program for the several orphanages which Khalsa Aid has been assisting since the deadly earthquake in January 2010. Teams arranged the installation of a new water pump in an especially isolated area, and delivered a ton of food.

17 Aug 2015

A joint team of volunteers from the UK and Canada travelled to Haiti to deliver food and water supplies to these same orphanages, supporting 600 children. The team went on to commission local contractors to build another new water pump, which now provides clean water to over 35 children.

08 Oct 2016

Nearly 900 people were killed by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti, with aid officials saying up to 90% of some areas have been destroyed. A dedicated relief team arrived on ground to assess damages and support local villages.

14 Aug 2021

Another stronger earthquake struck Haiti - with more that 50,000 homes destroyed, and 77,000 damages. Khalsa Aid provided further supplies, food and other essentials, as it does per quarter, to the same 11 orphanages.

"Countries, communities and NGOs must come together to support Haiti in its time of need. The situation is worse than previously imagined, there is significant destruction. People are literally running after clean water trucks and many are without out any power supply. The people of Haiti were still rebuilding from the earthquake, they really do need all the support we can provide.”
