19/11/21: The protests eventually led to the government repealing the controversial laws in November 2021.
The Indian farmers' protests involve mass demonstrations, including a prolonged blockade of highways leading to Delhi. This standoff has persisted for months. As Farmers continue to gather en-masse across the state borders with Delhi, the Khalsa Aid team has been on the ground from the outset, providing essential supplies, medical aid, and logistical support to the protesting farmers.
The Indian farmers' strike of 2021 is a major protest against three agricultural laws passed by the Indian government in 2020. Farmers, primarily from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, fear these laws will dismantle the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system and leave them vulnerable to exploitation by large corporations.
The situation for many of these farmers is already extremely precarious. Up to 112,000 people working in the agricultural sector have committed suicide in the past decade in India, with approximately 10,500 suicides reported in 2021 alone.
We are always humbled by the trust and love of our supporters; however, at present, there is no active fundraising for farmers protest by Khalsa Aid International. This is because there have been no requests for funds at this time.
Funds received intended for the farmers are being ring-fenced and will be used to support the farming projects in Punjab. We continue to monitor developments closely and remain flexible to respond as and when required in an efficient manner.
