Khalsa Aid on Ground to Assess Hurricane-Hit Jamaica

Khalsa Aid is on the ground in Jamaica assessing the impact of Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm that has caused severe destruction and displaced thousands across the island.

Khalsa Aid International team has arrived in Jamaica, where Hurricane Melissa has caused catastrophic destruction, leaving thousands of families in urgent need of food, clean water, and shelter.

At least 28 people have lost their lives, and many more remain displaced after the Category 5 hurricane, one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Caribbean, struck the island earlier this week.

Entire neighbourhoods in Montego Bay and Black River have been submerged, with homes swept away and roads cut off by landslides and fallen trees. Power remains out across much of the island, and aid agencies continue to face difficulties reaching isolated communities.

Khalsa Aid representatives are currently on the ground in the Black River region, assessing the situation in collaboration with other rescue teams and local authorities. The assessment aims to understand the immediate needs of affected families, the extent of damage, and how best to support ongoing humanitarian efforts in the region.

Founder and CEO Ravi Singh described the situation on the ground as “desperate”, with local authorities working tirelessly to clear blocked roads and reach people in cut-off areas. He said Khalsa Aid has been in contact with local organisations and churches to identify the most urgent needs, including food, shelter, and access to clean water.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by Hurricane Melissa,” said Ravi Singh, Founder and CEO of Khalsa Aid International.
“Our team on the ground is assessing needs in coordination with local agencies to understand how we can best support the response.”

Khalsa Aid representatives from the UK, US, and Canada are now preparing to travel to Jamaica to assist with the humanitarian response, helping deliver essential supplies such as emergency food, drinking water, and generators to the worst-affected communities.

Khalsa Aid has previously assisted communities impacted by major disasters across the world, from earthquakes in Turkey to floods in Panjab and refugee crises in the Middle East.

As the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa continues to unfold, Khalsa Aid stands in solidarity with the people of Jamaica and remains committed to supporting humanitarian efforts wherever possible.

Stay tuned for more updates from the ground.
