Our Tenth Mission
Indonesia
On 27 May 2006, an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck the Indonesian island of Java just before 6am local time. The epicenter was in the Indian Ocean and caused damage to the city of Yogyakarta and the surrounding towns. According to official figures 5,749 people were killed and more than 38,000 injured. Almost 600,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, and nearly 1.2 million people were left homeless. In total two million people.
Khalsa Aid sent a relief team to Java led by Parmjeet Kaur accompanied by Tejinder Singh and Dildeep Singh. The team surveyed the area and visited many affected villages. There were many areas in need of relief but Khalsa Aid decided to help the school children that were caught up in this tragic disaster.
Parmjeet Kaur ran art therapy sessions for young children as well as supplying hundreds of children with stationary and books. It was Parmjeet and Dildeeps first visit to a disaster zone and they were deeply touched by the welcome they received from the people of the areas they worked in and especially the warmth from the children.
